Phoenix Brighton was established in 1992 by a group of Brighton artists. In a town with one of the largest artist populations in the UK, Phoenix was addressing an urgent need for studio space on behalf of artists in the area. In 1995 PAA gained charitable status and in 1997 with the support of Brighton Council and a grant from the central government’s Single Regeneration Budget, was able to purchase its rented building.
With further grants from the Lottery and the Foundation for Sport and the Arts, Phoenix has been able to turn a dilapidated 60’s office building into over 100 self-contained artist’s workspaces, a gallery, and teaching rooms. Phoenix is now fundraising for further essential work on the building.
